We all have that one song that we keep going back to. Whether it is from a day ago, a month ago, or years ago. We seem to always find new meanings in old songs.
Lately, that song for me has been DaniLeigh’s “All I Know,” a song I first heard some time in late 2017. For those who have heard DaniLeigh’s name before, we associate her with “Lil Bebe;” however, we fail to realize that many of these artists already have songs out there, whether it be on their SoundCloud or a freestyle mix, that we may appreciate more.
When I first heard the song, I was trying to find a way out of my first job after college, trying to figure out how to date in the real world, and trying to figure out how to “adult,” but the song was just that: a song. A song I appreciated for sampling Aretha Franklin. A song I appreciated because the artist is Dominican. A song I appreciated because it had a good beat. It was just a song.
Over the past month, with the help of Spotify not always doing its best at shuffling, I have fallen in love again with this song for different reasons. With my parents getting married at the ages of 20 and 21, having me at 22 and 23, and seeming to have a lot of their life set from an early age, I have been feeling the pressure of figuring things out ASAP. However, as a 24-year-old, is everything really supposed to be black and white? This song now has meaning to me and perfectly aligns with how I feel about life right now:
- “I just gotta do me…that’s all I need, I got to be free.”
- “I know I can’t afford to stop.”
- “Won’t let me settle down, I just can’t right now. If you’re around when I come back around, then we might vibe.”
While DaniLeigh is specifically talking about her romantic relationship not aligning with the ambitions and goals she wants to achieve, I have been able to apply the lyrics to everything and everyone: friends, family, romantic relationships, and my career.
I am still not close to figuring out this thing called life, yet I have realized that there is no set-in-stone timeline that one has to always follow. When things are right and the stars align, that is when I will know how to do things and who should be around. However, life is something I have to figure out on my own with the right people and right goals; if something or someone is in the way, regardless of how much you want them or it around, you need to put it to the side. If it is right for you, it will come back around. Until then, cheers to the up and down journey of figuring things out.
